Translation comparison worksheet

Compare Bible Translations Without Mixing Them into a New Verse

Fix the same book, chapter, and verse range; record each translation’s full name and edition; then note wording differences and the questions they raise. Do not combine preferred phrases into a new verse or assume that one visible difference proves which translation is more accurate.

Lock the comparison before reading

Write the identical passage range at the top of both columns. Record translation name, abbreviation, revision or edition when shown, publisher or official source, and access date. Comparing different verse ranges or unknown editions produces noise before the wording analysis begins.

Bibleward uses the Berean Standard Bible for its displayed Scripture. The site’s sources-and-rights page explains that choice and separates Scripture text, editorial guidance, and audio rights.

Name the kind of difference

A difference may involve word order, an idiomatic expression, a repeated word, a supplied connector, or a footnote about manuscripts or an alternate rendering. Describe what you can see before explaining why it exists.

Short wording differences do not by themselves establish error or superiority. A confident judgment about original-language evidence requires sources and skills beyond a side-by-side glance.

Turn differences into questions

For each difference, ask whether it changes the main action, clarifies a relationship, alters tone, or points to a note worth checking. Then choose a next step: read the paragraph, inspect the translation’s footnote, consult its preface, or use a suitable study resource.

Bible Gateway’s 2017 official tutorial documents side-by-side comparison. Because interfaces change, this draft does not claim its buttons were tested in 2026 and includes no current screenshot.

Keep each translation intact

Do not splice one translation’s noun with another’s verb and publish the result as Scripture. In notes, use labels such as ‘Translation A’ and ‘Translation B,’ quote only within permissions, and preserve the source of every phrase.

End with one observed difference, one question, and one verification step. The worksheet intentionally avoids long quotations from modern translations.
