PASSAGE 1 / WORLD ENGLISH BIBLE CLASSIC

Mark 1:14–20

A beginning in Galilee (Bibleward editorial heading)

14Now after John was taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the Good News of God’s Kingdom,

15and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and God’s Kingdom is at hand! Repent, and believe in the Good News.”

16Passing along by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.

17Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you into fishers for men.”

18Immediately they left their nets, and followed him.

19Going on a little further from there, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who were also in the boat mending the nets.

20Immediately he called them, and they left their father, Zebedee, in the boat with the hired servants, and went after him.

PASSAGE 2 / WORLD ENGLISH BIBLE CLASSIC

Psalm 23:1–6

A shepherd psalm (Bibleward editorial heading)

1Yahweh is my shepherd; I shall lack nothing.

2He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.

3He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

4Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil. My cup runs over.

6Surely goodness and loving kindness shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in Yahweh’s house forever.

The publisher places the superscription “A Psalm by David.” before verse 1. Excerpt only; read the surrounding chapter when connected. Publisher footnotes are omitted, not merged into Scripture. Verse wording is unchanged; line wrapping and whitespace are normalized.

PASSAGE 3 / WORLD ENGLISH BIBLE CLASSIC

James 1:19–27

Hearing and doing (Bibleward editorial heading)

19So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger;

20for the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God.

21Therefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

22But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves.

23For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror;

24for he sees himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.

25But he who looks into the perfect law of freedom and continues, not being a hearer who forgets but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in what he does.

26If anyone among you thinks himself to be religious while he doesn’t bridle his tongue, but deceives his heart, this man’s religion is worthless.

27Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
