Original Bibleward reading resource · Numbers 6:1–21 and Matthew 2:19–23. Scripture descriptions are BSB-based paraphrases. The USCCB uses NABRE wording and provides Catholic editorial notes; their tentative interpretations stay attributed. This sheet does not instruct anyone to take a vow or classify a real person’s religious standing.

FieldNazirite cardNazarene / Nazorean card
PassageNumbers 6:1–21Matthew 2:19–23
Immediate subjectA special vow of dedicationJoseph’s return with the child and his mother, and residence in Nazareth
Direct evidenceMan or woman may undertake the vow (6:2); rules about vine products, hair, and the dead follow (6:3–8)Nazareth is the town in 2:23; Matthew connects the designation with the prophets
Completion or next detailCompletion includes offerings and shaving, then permission to drink wine (6:13–20)The paragraph does not narrate a Numbers 6 vow
Edition labelNazirite in the BSBNazarene in BSB; Nazorean in NABRE at USCCB
LimitOne feature alone does not prove a person’s entire vow statusSimilar spelling alone does not establish vow identity

2. The three-level evidence ladder

Nazirite and Nazarene: evidence cards and answer key
LevelWhat belongs here?Worked entry
T — Text observationSomething the verse actually narrates or stipulatesNumbers 6:2 includes both men and women taking the vow
C — Attributed commentaryA named source’s explanation, with its certainty preservedThe USCCB’s Matthew 2:23 note discusses possible prophetic word associations
N — Not established hereAn inference the assigned evidence does not supportEvery person connected with Nazareth must have undertaken Numbers 6’s vow

A commentary can offer a valuable explanation without becoming part of the biblical text. “Not established here” does not mean the opposite proposition has automatically been proved.

3. Worked correction

Initial note, invented for practice: Similar English letters prove that Jesus took the full Numbers 6 vow.

Revised note: Numbers 6 describes a vow and requirements. Matthew 2:23 supplies a town and designation. The USCCB discusses possible literary connections; the paragraph itself does not narrate Jesus taking that vow. I need additional evidence before making a claim about vow status.

Why it is better: it keeps a text observation, an attributed possibility, and an unproved conclusion separate. It adds no assumptions about a person’s hair, drink, or private commitment.

4. Six classification exercises

Assign T, C, or N and write a locator. Cover the key until you have tried all six.

  1. Numbers 6 includes a woman as well as a man in its opening vow instruction. Category: ___; locator: ____________________.

  2. Numbers 6 describes shaving as part of completion, although cutting the hair was restricted during the vow period. Category: ___; locator: ____________________.

  3. Matthew places the family in Nazareth and connects the designation to the prophets. Category: ___; locator: ____________________.

  4. The USCCB suggests possible associations with Isaiah 11:1 and Judges 13:5, 7 when explaining Matthew 2:23. Category: ___; source: ____________________.

  5. The English spelling proves that every resident of Nazareth observed all Numbers 6 requirements. Category: ___; reason: ____________________.

  6. Numbers 6’s completion arrangements prove that every other biblical person’s dedication had the same duration. Category: ___; reason: ____________________.

5. Answer key

  1. T. Numbers 6:2 identifies a man or woman. The later singular phrasing must be read with that opening scope.

  2. T. Read Numbers 6:5 beside 6:13 and 6:18–20. The restriction during the period and shaving at completion are different moments, not a contradiction created by one action happening twice at once.

  3. T. Matthew 2:23. Record Nazarene for BSB or Nazorean for NABRE. The observation concerns the passage and edition, not a reconstructed etymology.

  4. C. USCCB’s note on Matthew 2:23. Keep “possible associations” visible; do not rewrite it as a proven word derivation or a claim that Matthew supplies those cross-references explicitly.

  5. N. Neither assigned passage supplies such a rule. A town-related designation is not evidence that all its bearers took a specified vow.

  6. N. The completion sequence in Numbers 6 does not establish the duration of every individual dedication mentioned elsewhere. Those cases would need their own passages and review.
