Bible source cards: identify, record, and retrieve
Use your browser’s Print command to print or save as PDF. This worksheet works offline after download; external sources need a connection. Read the companion guide
Original Bibleward worksheet. Bracketed fields below are placeholders to replace. They are not invented publication facts. The two completed examples are personal-note records, not formal MLA works-cited entries.
A. Choose the correct card
What supplied the words I am using?
|
+-- Biblical verse text in translation --> CARD 1: Scripture translation
|
+-- Preface or introduction ------------> CARD 2: Editorial contribution
|
+-- Study note or commentary -----------> CARD 3: Explanation of Scripture
|
+-- My own summary/reflection ----------> Label it as my own; attach sources
for ideas or facts learned elsewhere.B. Three copyable source cards

C. Two worked personal-note records — examples, checked 24 September 2026
| Field | Example A | Example B |
|---|---|---|
| Material used | Scripture translation; reference only | Scripture translation; reference only |
| Translation | Berean Standard Bible (BSB) | World English Bible (WEB) |
| Edition identifier | BSB web display on Bible Hub; no numbered digital revision stated on this passage page | Protestant Edition, identified by eBible.org at engwebp |
| Platform | Bible Hub | eBible.org |
| Passage | Mark 1:1 | Mark 1:1 |
| Link | Open BSB Mark 1 | Open WEB Mark 1 |
| Publication-date note | Passage page lists several print years; a unique publication date for this web display is not established | Index identifies HTML/source-file generation on 22 September 2026; this is a digital-generation date, not the translation’s original publication year |
| Edition-information link | BSB publisher | WEB edition index |
| Access date | 24 September 2026 | 24 September 2026 |
| Quoted text | None copied for this exercise | None copied for this exercise |
This records an actual inspected pair of pages. Live pages may change; recheck and enter your own access date. Do not add a print publisher, ISBN, or edition year you have not found.
D. MLA templates — incomplete until you replace the placeholders
Print Bible template:
[Title of Bible edition]. [Version if not already in title], [relevant editor/translator if stated], [edition if stated], [Publisher], [Publication year].
Online Bible template:
[Title of Bible edition]. [Version/edition if needed], [Website or container], [publication date if supplied], [URL]. Accessed [day month year].
Preface template:
[Contributor surname], [given name]. Preface. [Bible title], [relevant edition/editor details], [Publisher], [year], pp. [page range].
These show element order, not a rule to include every field. Remove inapplicable fields and their punctuation; consult the required handbook for a missing author, date, or other edge case. The Purdue books guide covers Bibles and contributions within books.
In-text illustration: ([Edition title], Mark 1.1). Italicize the substituted edition title. This illustrates the book/chapter/verse pattern on Purdue’s in-text guide, rather than quoting any Bible wording.
E. Retrieval exercise and answer checks
Open both worked links. Do they identify the same book, chapter, and verse? ______
Locate the full translation/edition name for each. Is “Bible Hub” a translation name? ______
Does the WEB source-file generation date establish its original translation publication year? ______
Imagine your sentence came from a study note on Mark 1:1. Which card applies, and what extra locator is needed? ______
Checks:
Both worked records locate Mark 1:1. Read the verse number, not just a heading or search excerpt.
The versions are BSB and WEB Protestant Edition. Bible Hub identifies a platform; it does not replace the translation name.
No. It describes generation/source-file timing for that digital resource. Do not relabel it as the original publication date.
Use Card 3 and record the note author/editor if supplied, study edition, and page or note label. Keep the verse and explanation distinguishable.
Before sharing: [ ] Source identified [ ] Location verified [ ] Quotation/paraphrase/reflection separated [ ] Reuse conditions checked for intended quoting
AI-assisted original educational worksheet. No verse text is copied; Mark 1:1 was resolved against BSB v5.9 and the two linked live displays. Formal assignment requirements take precedence over these examples.
